SCAF prototype project

Goals of the project: Build two SCAF towers to achieve the following goals.

To test and show the efficiency of a SCAF tower to quickly and noticeably reduce the levels of particulate and gaseous pollution in the air and to measure the range of the tower's effect. More precisely, the towers aim to remove the air pollutants resulting from traffic, PM10s, soot and CO2 for example by filtration, and reduce emissions by simultaneously producing green energy.

To test and show the efficiency of a SCAF tower to produce green energy.

Measure the beneficial effects of the cleaner air on the health of the residents in the SCAF's zone of effect.

Promote the use of state of the art green technology.

Monitor the energy production levels and pollution reductions over two years.

Project criteria:

One or two pieces of unused land situated near high traffic roads, ceded to the project by the city. Either one plot of 600 m2 or two plots, one 380 m2 the other 115 m2.

Structure criteria: Of the two towers to be built, one will be of minimum dimensions the other half size. So, SCAF 1: Collection surface of approximately 314 m2 (tempered glass, anti reflective), half glass half DSC. A diametre of 20 metres with a chimney 15 metres high and an outer wall 1.25 metres high. The surface area of the filtres is 45% of the exterior wall and the surface area of the chimney hole is 10% of the filtre surface. SCAF 2: Collection surface of approximately 79 m2, half glass half DSC. A diametre of 10 metres with an extendable chimney 10 - 15 metres high and an outer wall 1 metre high.

To evaluate the health effects on the residents in the zone of effect, a health study will be organised with doctors in the area of the construction or with a local hospital and/or university.

Current situation : There are currently no other projects that simultaneously act directly to reduce the gaseous and particulate traffic pollution already present in the air of a city and produce green energy to help reduce emissions. In most cities, the only option open to them to reduce ambient levels of pollution in the city is reducing traffic. This can be impractical and detrimental to the businesses in the city.

Expected gains:

Higher air quality in the SCAFs zone of effect. Clearer air will lead to the next gains.

Reductions in medical visits for pulmonary disorders of habitants in the SCAFs zone.

Better general health for the residents in the zone of effect.

Interest of a city in the construction of a SCAF network and implementation of the DSC sub project.

Higher profile for SCAF project, DSCs and project sponsors

Project perimetres: This prototype project covers the construction of two prototype SCAF towers and the monitoring of the results achieved over 2 years for concept validation.

SCAF network project:

Build a network of SCAF towers in cities to achieve the following goals.

1. To quickly and noticeably reduce the levels of pollution in the air. More precisely the towers aim to remove the air pollutants resulting from traffic and industry, PM10s, soot and CO2 for example by filtration, and simultaneously producing green energy.

2. To produce green energy to supplement the city's needs.

3. Measure the beneficial effects of the cleaner air on the health of the residents in the SCAF's zone of effect.

4.  Promote the use of state of the art green technology, DSC's (Dye Solar Cells).

5. Reduce city's building maintenance costs.

Project criteria:

At least 20 areas per city (roundabouts, highway centre strips or traffic islands) with a minimum surface area of 350 m2, situated near high traffic roads, ceded to the project by the city or state.

To evaluate the health effects on the residents in the zone of effect, a health study will be organised with doctors in the area and with local hospitals.

Structure criteria: Each  tower to be built will be at least of minimum dimensions. So,

Collection surface of approximately 314 m2 (tempered glass, anti reflective), half glass half DSC. A diametre of 20 metres with a chimney minimum 15 metres high and an outer wall 1.25 metres high. The surface area of the filtres is 45% of the exterior wall and the surface area of the chimney hole is 10% of the filtre surface.

Expected gains:

1. A higher air quality in the SCAFs zone of effect. Clearer air will lead to the next gains.

2. A reduction in medical visits for pulmonary disorders of habitants in the SCAFs zone.

3. Better general health for the residents in the zone of effect.

4. Interest of other cities in the construction of a SCAF network and implementation of the DSC sub project.

5. Higher profile for SCAF project, and DSCs

Project perimetres:

This project covers the construction of a network of SCAF towers and organising the monitoring of the results achieved.
